IDARED

USA

Idared is the American variety created in 1935 by combing the varieties Jonathan and Wag(e)ner, and it was introduced in production in 1942. This is a highly productive plantation variety. Due to its corpulent and nice fruit, good flavor and the ability to be kept in storage for an unusually lengthy period, Idared is a very respectable apple variety.
Idared smells like a perfume. Crispy and pale-yellow flesh is juicy, the texture is fine and gentle, the flavor is tart sweet, and the aroma is subtle. This is a great variety for fresh consumption, but it is also very good for fruit salads.

COLOR

Fruits are yellowish-green, relatively or entirely covered with red.

GOLDEN DELICIOUS

WEST VIRGINIA/USA/1905

Golden Delicious originates from the USA, where it was discovered spontaneously in 1905. The nursery of Stark brothers bought the license for this sort, so we can say that since then it has been in regular production. Even today, this variety represents one of the most important apple varieties in the world. And indeed, what Stark found on the hills of West Virginia that special day is truly gold. ’’With this apple in hand, you cannot be sure if you are drinking champagne or eating an apple’’, Stark declared with excitement. From that day until today, this apple has gained huge popularity among the producers, thus it is grown in all major, warm regions of the world.

The fruits of Golden Delicious are medium large to large. The shape is round-conical. It has thin and sensitive crust, which is why it is especially important to treat it carefully during the harvest and manipulation. The primary color of the crust is green, which turns into golden-yellow once it’s ripe. The flesh is bright yellow, firm, juicy and sweet with a bit of acidity.

WINTER VARIETY

The fruits ripen from mid-September until the end of September

FRUITS

Medium large to large (150-220g), conical

COLOR

Primary green-yellow color, in the harvest period it becomes yellow.

It is expected that in the following decades this variety will have a prominent place on the market of apples.

GRANNY SMITH

WEST VIRGINIA/USA/1905

Perhaps one of the most recognizable of all apple varieties, and the best known, Granny Smith is one of the most famous export products of Australia. It was discovered in Australia in the 60’s of the 19th century. It is assumed that it was an accidental hybrid of the wild European apple and domestic apple. The lady Maria Ann Smith, which discovered it, found that the apple is versatile, meaning it is good for cooking as well as for fresh consumption. She named the new variety Granny Smith, thus she is to thank for the popularity of this variety. By the 60’s of the 20th century, Granny Smith became the synonym for apple. This slightly unusual apple attracts looks with its grass color. It can be stored for a long time and because of its versatility the consumers love it. It holds a major place on the market primarily because of its attractive green color. The flavor is very acidic. It is a crispy apple, the flesh is white, firm and juicy.

WINTER VARIETY

It ripens in the second decade of October.

FRUITS

Large to very large (200-250g), round-conical. Primary color is dark green, the color of grass, which becomes lighter as the fruit ripens.

GALA

It is a very aromatic apple. The fruits are symmetrical, round-conical, small to medium large. The primary color of the fruit is greenish-yellow, while the secondary color is red. The flesh is pale yellow, juicy, firm, aromatic and sweet.

RED DELICIOUS

USA

Red Delicious is one of the most famous American apple varieties and it belongs to the leading world varieties in the production structure. Red Delicious and Golden Delicious are different varieties in their essence, even though they have similar names and certain mutual characteristics (both were created in USA at the end of the 19th century they have interesting stories and their flavor is sweet). Red Delicious is intensively grown in modern plantations and has a lot of descendants, Fuji being potentially the most interesting one. This variety is also special because of the considerable number of its clones, which are characterized by different lusciousness, as well as the degree of fruit coloration. The taste is sweet and slightly mild at the same time, the flesh is crispy and juicy, has a high percentage of sugar and a low percentage of acids. The fruits are large to very large (180-250g), conical, with highly accentuated ’’ribs’’ on the calyx.

FALL VARIETY

The dominant color is greenish-yellow, with intense red covering more than 70% of the surface.

BRAEBURN

WEST VIRGINIA / USA / 1905

Braeburn is a relatively new variety in our regions, even though it is not actually a new variety. This apple also originates from New Zealand, and it has been famous since 1950. The popularity of Braeburn grows each year, both on the European market and our national market, even though here it is not as popular as it is in other European countries. With around 300.000t of annual production it comprises circa 2,5% of the EU production.* In our orchards, it is still not that common, but the plantations under this variety are slowly growing. This variety is especially interesting on the markets of Western Europe. We can say that our consumers are still getting to know this variety, but its popularity has been growing lately, thus we can expect a bigger need for this variety in the years that follow.

FALL VARIETY

The tree is medium luscious and highly productive. Braeburn is not susceptible to alternative production. In our conditions, this variety ripens in mid-October.

FRUITS

Fruits are medium large, conical and a bit heavier. The flesh is firm, juicy and tart sweet.

This variety can be stored for a long time. It ripens until October.

To make good wine, it is necessary to cut down the yield. It ripens early and is thereby not suitable for extremely warm climates.

The aroma of this wine depends largely on the region in which the grape is grown, and the most popular wines come from Burgundy. For that reason, it is often called black burgundy. It ripens in the middle of September.
